Trying to find the right pillow that brings you the perfect balance of comfort and support shouldn’t be a chore. Let’s take a deep dive into the most common types of pillow fills to decide which type is best to address your sleep needs.

Memory Foam Pillows

The popular trend of ergonomic sleep solutions has rapidly gained traction, causing more and more sleepers to be on the lookout for memory foam pillows. With benefits such as pressure relief, improved alignment, and enhanced support, memory foam has become a popular pick for sleepers looking for firm, responsive support from their pillow. Memory foam comes in two main types: a solid memory foam core or shredded memory foam.

Solid Memory Foam

A solid memory foam core is what most people think of when they first consider a memory foam pillow. This solid foam core provides firm support with a responsive give that molds to the body and distributes body weight.

Our memory foam core pillows are made from viscoelastic polyurethane, which has low resistance to better relieve pressure. The foam cores are also ventilated, allowing for better breathability that most solid memory foam cores lack.

Shredded Memory Foam

If you enjoy the responsive, pressure-relieving support of memory foam but want a more adaptable or cooler option, shredded memory foam is a great alternative. Shredded memory foam pillows can easily be fluffed and shaped for your ideal sleep surface and support level. Its quick-contouring support offers comfort and relief, with added breathability from the airflow between the puffs of foam.

Down & Feather Pillows

Down pillows are known for being pillows of luxury, with a soft, comfortable fill that provides natural plush & cozy sleep. Down offers lasting support that cradles the head and keeps you warm during the cooler months.

While down and feathers can be combined, they are two separate things. Down is the fluffy undercoating of the feathers, coming from the chest and underbelly of birds, and does not include quills, making them softer and more insulating. Feathers are larger and offer more support than down by itself, coming from the wings and backs of ducks or geese.

A common complaint of down or feather pillows is that the filling can easily escape or poke out of the pillow cover. However, our Cooling Down Pillow includes an exclusive down-proof chambered liner that makes your sleep surface smooth and comfortable.

Down Alternative / Fiber Pillows

As the name suggests, down alternative provides another choice for those who like the plush feel of a down pillow but want a more hypoallergenic or affordable option. A fiber-filled pillow is made from synthetic polyester fibers to provide similar comfort and support to traditional down.

Our fiber-filled pillows include our exclusive down alternative fiber fill, Identically Down™, which is loved for its breathable, moisture-wicking benefits, and many of our fiber pillows are made from recycled polyester for an eco-friendlier option.  Another benefit of fiber is that it’s easy to care for and typically machine washable.

Wool Pillows

Wool pillows are best loved for their reliable, long-lasting durability and cradling comfort. All-natural wool fill doesn’t flatten or lose its shape as quickly as other types of fills, so it can be used longer. A wool pillow is both soft and supportive while providing a springiness that prevents the fill from clumping.

In our All Seasons Wool Pillow, we use a unique type of wool known as Merino wool, sourced from Merino sheep in Australia. This type of wool addresses a common issue many sleepers have with traditional wool, which is its too-warm, insulating properties. Merino wool provides natural thermoregulation and moisture-wicking benefits, providing better year-round comfort.

Combination Fill Pillows

If you can’t decide which type of fill you want to address your specific sleep needs, combination fill pillows can give you the best of both worlds. We offer two types of combination fills: hybrid/reversible pillows and blended fill pillows.

Our hybrid SoftCell® pillows offer a dual sleep surface, with two separate fills on the opposite sides. On one side, you’ll find a soft fiber fill and on the other, a firm memory foam fill. This allows you to choose which type of support you want based on your sleep position, preference, or needs.

Our blended fill pillows combine two types of fill together inside the same pillow to offer balanced support. For example, our Shattered Ice Foam & Fiber Pillow includes a combination of our premium shredded memory foam and our Identically Down™ fiber for balanced soft and responsive support.

How Do I Know Which Pillow I Need?

When it comes to choosing your ideal pillow, it all comes down to your specific sleep preferences and needs. Depending on your sleep position, you may want a pillow with very soft support, typically better for stomach sleepers, or very firm support, often recommended for back sleepers. The type of mattress you have can also impact the support type you need from your pillow.
