Antimicrobial treatments are used in a wide variety of products, including bandages, medical tubes, water tanks, clothing, and kitchen products. You may even be familiar with the term “antimicrobial” due to products like soaps, face creams, mouthwashes, or common medications. But what does it really mean if a product is “antimicrobial”?
Antimicrobial Treatments – Are They Important?
The term antimicrobial refers to a product’s ability to reduce the effects of or kill off microorganisms like bacteria or mold. Antimicrobial properties are what help keep hospital patients safe from infections. Antimicrobial treatments can help keep your products safe, clean, and protected from bacteria.
Antimicrobial vs. Antibacterial
While you may hear the terms antimicrobial and antibacterial used interchangeably, the two have slightly different meanings. They both have the same basic use—inhibiting or killing off bacteria. However, antimicrobial treatments often take things a step further. Instead of just actively preventing bacteria growth within products like antibacterial treatments do, antimicrobial treatments also hinder the growth of other microorganisms like fungi, algae, and dust mites. This added layer of protection from antimicrobial treatments can help reduce odor-causing and damaging microbes in your products.
How Antimicrobial Treatments Help on Bedding
Your bedding is the perfect incubator for bacteria. Throughout the night, your body naturally sheds skin cells, moisture, and sweat, which accumulate in and spread throughout your bedding. These microorganisms living in your bedding can lead to unpleasant odors, staining, or even mold that can deteriorate your mattress, pillows, and bedding. Antimicrobial treatments have self-sanitizing properties that can help inhibit and kill off those bacteria, keeping your bedding fresher and cleaner.
AgCl – Silver Chloride Product Protection
Antimicrobial Silver Product Protection (AgCl) helps keep your bedding fresher longer by inhibiting bacteria, mold, and mildew that cause deterioration, stains, and odors on our treated products. These silver ions work by rupturing the microbe’s cell membrane, blocking its ability to take in oxygen, process vital nutrients, and divide, essentially destroying it from the inside out.
To apply this treatment to our products, the fabric is immersed in a special silver chloride solution, ensuring it absorbs the antimicrobial effects to provide lasting freshness. This treatment is OEKO-TEX® certified, meaning it is safe from harmful substances.
Most of our Purecare-branded sheets, pillows, and protectors come treated with our Antimicrobial Silver Product Protection (AgCl). This treatment never impacts the comfort or softness of our fabrics and remains active for over 50 washings.
Keep your bedding fresher, longer with our premium bedding treated with antimicrobial silver product protection.
