Health-Conscious Lifestyle: Your Bedroom
You’re making healthy decisions for you and your family every day. You put great food on the table, you make time for exercise, and you balance work with the things and people you enjoy most. But what are you doing to improve your health at night?
If you’ve established a solid sleep pattern of eight hours per night, you’re already one step ahead of many Americans. Numerous studies have confirmed that how we live in today’s 24/7 society directly effects how we sleep. According to WebMD, about 20% of Americans report that they get less than six hours of sleep on average. If you fall into this group and have yet to make sleep a priority, it’s time to get serious about your sleep goals.
But beyond the ideal sleep cycle, what else can be done to improve your sleep health? For answers, we turned to Dr. Phillip M. Tierno, Director of Clinical Microbiology & Immunology at New York University Langone Medical Center and author of the book, The Secret Life of Germs, who has been clinically testing our mattress and pillow protectors for nearly a decade.
“The accumulated quantities of allergens that build up in your mattress (and pillows) over time, like fungi, bacteria, dust mites, dander, and numerous other particulates, can lead to exacerbations of asthma and allergies or contribute to their development,” says Tierno. “A medical-quality mattress protector is the solution.” This is a powerful recommendation based on the fact that over 60 million Americans suffer from allergens and allergy-induced asthma.
Beyond Dr. Tierno’s clinical testing, our PureCare protectors also bear the exclusive seals of The National Sleep Foundation and the Women’s Choice Award. These two partnerships combined provide our customers with the sleep health and wellness information they crave along with the peace of mind of knowing that our protectors are used and recommended by health conscience consumers just like you.

How to Make Your Bed: The Grown-up Guide to a Healthy Sleep Environment
My last post of 2015 outlined my Top 10 healthy sleep resolutions for the New Year. True to my goal, I’m starting this year off with a post on the basics—the GROWN-UP (see the emphasis here?) guide to a healthy sleep environment. Think you already know this stuff? Think again.
As children, we were taught that making our bed consisted of pulling up the sheets, straightening the bedspread, and arranging the pillows in such a way that your mother would be pleased. This is not the type of tutorial you’re going to find here. As adults, we should know better. Making the bed is less about the daily task and more about creating a health sleep environment. Our step-by-step guide to grown-up bed-making is sure to include a few fun facts you’ve never dreamt of.
Step 1: You may be surprised to learn that sheets are not the first (or second) layer of bedding that should go on your mattress. Whether your mattress is brand new or has passed the test of time, a total encasement mattress protector is the first (and arguably the most important) layer of bedding. Designed to “encase” your mattress, the total encasement zips completely around your mattress and protects it (and you) from bed bugs, dust mites, allergens, moisture, and stains that inevitably settle into your sleep environment. Ideally, you should apply the total encasement to your mattress the day it is delivered, but the encasement should also be applied to an older mattress in order to keep what’s already living inside of it (ICK!) there for good.
Step 2: Now that you’ve wrestled your total encasement protector onto your mattress, there is a good chance you don’t want to do it every time you wash your bedding. That’s why the second step is another layer of mattress protection—the 5-Sided. A PureCare 5-Sided mattress protector fits your mattress just like a fitted sheet. Easy on, easy off, this thin yet effective layer of bedding will be your best friend on laundry day. Simply slip it off to launder (on hot settings for PureCare’s protectors), leaving your total encasement protector right where it is. The total encasement continues to protect your mattress and is still perfectly clean because the 5-Sided has been covering it all the while. See where I’m going here?
This is where things get cool…literally. Along with the wellness and protection benefits, you can choose additional 5-Sided features like our FRíO rapid chill cooling protector. This marvel of technical textiles is proven to reduce heat along your sleep surface at a rate 5x faster than regular polyester. This ain’t your mama’s mattress protector.
Step 3: Sheets, right? Nope. You’ve protected your mattress from the irritants and allergens that settle into your sleep environment, now how about your pillows? Consider this: The average adult sheds up to a liter of liquid each and every night. While most of that perspiration or drool (you know who you are) evaporates throughout the night, the remainder soaks into your mattress and pillows, accumulating and creating a breeding ground for dust mites and allergens. Pillow protectors are key in the defense of a healthy sleep environment and can bring additional benefits to the table as well. Consider PureCare’s Aromatherapy pillow protectors, a simple solution to adding the soothing effects of aromatherapy to your nightly routine. Welcome to the future of tranquil slumber.
Step 4: Ok, let’s step into familiar territory here. We’re finally ready for the sheets. Now remember, this isn’t the step-by-step of how to make your bed—this is the grown-up guide on how to make your bed into a healthy sleep environment. So, before you think about putting on those worn out, pilled cotton covers you call linens, let’s look at some upgraded options. PureCare’s entire collection of Elements premium sheets not only feature a beautiful feel and precision fit, they also incorporate technical textiles that enhance your sleep environment. The Celliant® sheet collection utilizes Celliant technology embedded into each fiber to help increase circulation and balance your body temperature. The Bamboo sheet collection incorporates bamboo rayon and quality cotton fibers to create a gentle and rich comfort. And, of course, our Tencel collection, botanically crafted from raw wood pulp to provide a cool-to-the-touch, naturally breathable sleep surface. Hard to choose? Don’t! Having more than one set of sheets makes laundry day less stressful and helps your sheet sets last longer.
Step 5: Incorporating your own style into your sleep environment is an important factor in transforming your bedroom into your adult sleep sanctuary. Be gone, ratty blankets and sports-themed throws! Retailers like Crate&Barrel or their younger and more mod sister brand CB2 have beautiful selections of bedding and linens that help complete your grown-up sleep style.
